Did you miss me this weekend? After 130+ daily posts, I took a couple of days off. Life’s unpredictability often brings with it stress that can accumulate over days and weeks, leaving us feeling overwhelmed. Whether it’s professional pressures, academic challenges, or unforeseen family crises, the weight of these responsibilities can demand a much-needed pause for rest and rejuvenation.

The buildup of stress necessitates a conscious effort to step back and recharge. Research underscores the benefits of taking time off, including enhanced well-being, productivity, and creativity. It’s during these moments of rest that we rediscover our zest for life and work, returning with a refreshed perspective.

A Personal Tale of Stress

Last week served as a stark reminder of how quickly things can pile up. A simple act of driving turned complex when my 18-year-old son was rear-ended, driving a vehicle he had just sold to his sister. With his new truck in the shop and deadlines looming, what followed was a whirlwind of tasks: from dealing with insurance claims to finding a rental car suitable for an 18-year-old, to the eventual realization that the car was totaled. All this, while juggling a 40-hour workweek and school assignments, and living an hour away from the necessary services.

The physical and emotional toll of stress—exhaustion, lost appetite, rising blood pressure—were clear indicators that it was time to pause. Listening to my body’s distress signals was crucial in acknowledging that I had reached my limit. Taking the initiative to disconnect involved several deliberate actions:

Turning Off Notifications: Silencing the constant barrage of digital reminders. This also meant stepping away from all electronics to minimize all external pressures, regardless of whether professional or personal.

Setting Boundaries: Establishing clear limits on my availability, especially by communicating how I was feeling with my husband and children. I have a tendency to go-go-go until I crash. Learning to recognize the signs of an impending crash – which has proven to trigger my fibromyalgia and increased pain and exhaustion – and setting appropriate boundaries means I can bounce back quicker.

Prioritizing Self-Care: Dedicating time to activities that nourish the soul and body, from reading to simply resting, and maybe binge-watching my favorite series, gave me a total mental time out.

A Weekend of Recharging

Choosing to take Saturday off to disconnect from all obligations allowed me to catch up on sleep and find a state of deep relaxation. This break from routine was not about escaping responsibilities but about regaining my strength to handle them better.

Sunday was balanced with manageable chores and moments of pleasure, such as detailing my truck and spending quality time with my puppy, rejuvenating my spirit further. The tranquility found in nature, the joy of revisiting a neglected hobby, or the comfort of being with loved ones—these are the experiences that help mend the wear and tear of a stressful week. It’s crucial to fill our weekends with activities that restore our peace and energy.

Stress, especially when it stems from unexpected challenges, can fray our edges and test our limits. Taking a weekend off to focus on self-care is not an act of evasion but a strategy for resilience. It’s about preserving our well-being so we can face our responsibilities with renewed vigor and clarity.
