I am really excited to announce that starting February 1, 2024, I will be publishing a series of articles to push your performance to the next level! This will be an exciting journey designed to broaden your knowledge and skills beyond the confines of your usual interests or industry. In today’s rapidly evolving world, the ability to adapt and learn from a diverse array of sources is not just an asset – it’s a necessity. This challenge is about stepping outside of a specific subject matter and applying it to the core area of your life – your performance! For example, a lot of people read my articles because they provided a lot of information about productivity, but that is a very specific and narrow topic. So let’s step out of your comfort zone and discover the interconnectedness of knowledge by looking at increasing performance from other areas of life.

Curious To Know More?
Sticking to what we know offers comfort, but it also limits our growth. By delving into areas outside our expertise, we expose ourselves to new ideas, perspectives, and methodologies. This exposure is crucial for fostering creativity and innovation. Whether you’re reading about a different industry, watching documentaries on new subjects, or learning a skill unrelated to your field, each new piece of knowledge enhances your cognitive flexibility. So I’ve looked at a variety of different areas of interest to me, but applying those principles to improving my overall performance in all areas of my life. This aids in productivity too!
The Non-Linear Nature of Learning
Our learning and growth system is far from linear; it’s holistic. The insights you gain from one area can unexpectedly enhance your understanding or performance in another. This cross-pollination of ideas can lead to groundbreaking innovations, personal growth, and increased performance. By engaging in various learning experiences, you’re not just accumulating knowledge; you’re weaving a rich tapestry of interconnected insights.

For example, one of my projects is to look at developing efficiencies within our workflow. While using an app that can scan receipts, segment out the type of receipt, the total, and the date plus provide a breakdown budget summary, I had an idea about how to apply this technology to improve our workflow. Nothing about the scanning of receipts has anything to do with my role as a project manager – but – the capability to scan something, capture very specific data, and to aggregate it opens a lot of innovative ideas that we could explore.
Teach Your Mind To Avoid Compartmentalization
Training the brain to avoid compartmentalization is akin to nurturing a garden with diverse flora. Just as a garden thrives with a variety of plants, the mind flourishes when it integrates information from different domains. This approach involves consciously challenging the tendency to keep knowledge in isolated ‘boxes’, encouraging instead a synthesis of ideas and perspectives. This is what creates those “lightbulb” moments that take everyone else by surprise.
By engaging in activities that require interdisciplinary thinking, such as solving complex problems or exploring new ideas that blend different skills, we can cultivate a more interconnected way of thinking. This holistic approach not only enhances creativity and innovation but also improves our ability to adapt and find solutions in an ever-changing world. It’s about teaching our brain to see the threads that connect disparate pieces of knowledge, weaving them into a cohesive tapestry of understanding and insight.
